Topic: The Looming Water Crisis
“Out of sight; Out of mind” was the thinking that characterized Pakistan’s apathetic approach towards water usage. The year 2018 saw a renewed interest in old reports that had time and time again warned Pakistan of its impending crisis. The fear of what is to come, finally led Pakistan to create its first national water policy in 72 years. However, the issue is far from resolved. This momentum of progress needs to be capitalized; for ignoring it is a luxury we no longer can afford. The sense of urgency cannot be assuaged yet because Pakistan’s economy continues to suffer without our knowing and, when drought conditions worsen, the entire population will suffer The National Commission on Water has been set up to deliberate on Pakistan’s situation. Discussions will begin with an exploration of the causes of the crisis and the factors which kept those causes alive to creating frameworks which represent concrete steps to rectify not only Pakistan’s Water Policy but also reverse Pakistan’s progress as an increasingly water scarce country.
